3 Questions to Ask Before You Festive-Proof a Small Home

Small homes lose the most to festive decorating, not the least. Every extra object takes up a proportionally bigger share of the room.

Before adding anything this week, three questions worth asking first.

Where will this actually get walked around? In a small home, every new decor piece is competing directly with the space people move through daily. Before placing anything, walk the room as if you’re carrying something, a tray, a child, groceries. If a piece is in that path, it’s not decor. It’s an obstacle waiting to happen.

What’s leaving the room to make space for this? Small homes rarely have room to simply add. Every festive object that comes in usually needs something, a regular piece of furniture, a stack of daily-use items, to temporarily go elsewhere. Deciding what moves out before deciding what comes in prevents the cluttered feeling that hits most small festive setups by day three!!

Will this still make sense in the room’s normal life, or does it only work festively styled? A small home doesn’t have a spare corner that only exists for nine days. Every festive addition needs to either fold into daily use, a tray that becomes a catch-all after, a runner that stays on the table year round, or be genuinely easy to put fully away, not half-stored somewhere it’s now in the way.

None of these questions are really about restraint for its own sake.

They’re about making sure a small home still feels like a home to actually live in, not just a home dressed up for nine days and difficult to move through the whole time.
