“Still okay” according to whom?

I figured out why trends feel so intense..

I was standing in a furniture showroom, watching two people argue about a sofa.

Not about comfort.

About whether it was “still okay.”

That phrase stopped me..

Still okay according to whom?

Nobody in the room could say.

It reminded me of middle school.

Not the sofa part. The rules.

Nobody wrote them down, but everyone knew them.

Which backpack was fine, which shoes were embarrassing, which song you could admit to liking.

You didn’t pick things because you loved them.

You picked them because they kept you safe.

And the scariest part was how fast the rules changed.

One week something was cool. The next, it was something people quietly stopped mentioning.

Nobody announced it.

You just felt it, in the room, like a temperature drop.

Home design runs on the same machinery.

A shape becomes popular, and owning it says “I belong.”

A shape goes out, and owning it says “I haven’t noticed.”

Nobody wants to be the person who hasn’t noticed.

So we buy the sofa, repaint the wall, and swap the lamp.

Not because the old one stopped working.

Because it started saying the wrong thing.

Here’s what I find hopeful about that.

Once you see it, you can stop playing.

You don’t have to ignore trends. You can enjoy them, borrow from them, wear them for a season.

You just get to ask a better question than “is this still okay?”

You get to ask, “do I actually like this?”

The people I admire in design aren’t the ones who follow every cycle or refuse every one.

They’re the ones who decided what they like, and stayed calm while the room around them changed its mind.

That’s the real adult version.

You don’t need permission from the table in the cafeteria…

You get to sit wherever you want, with whatever sofa you chose…!!
