The Color Everyone's Suddenly Painting Their Walls (And Why It's Not Random)
I’ve had the same paint conversation five times this month.
Terracotta, warm ochre, deep clay tones, all requested almost word for word the same way. “Something warm, something earthy, not white.”
It’s not a coincidence, and it’s not really about trends the way people assume.
Part of it is genuinely seasonal. As natural light shifts through September and into the festive months, cooler months bring softer, lower-angle light for more of the day, and warm wall tones actually read better under that light than they do under harsh summer sun.
The color isn’t just fashionable. It’s responding to something real about the light in the room!!
Part of it is reactive.
The last several years leaned heavily into cool grays and stark white minimalism. Warm earthy tones are the natural swing back, the way trends usually move in a pendulum rather than a straight line.
And part of it is genuinely practical for Indian homes specifically.
Warm tones hide the dust and scuff marks that show up fast in a lived-in home far better than a pale gray or white does, which matters more in daily life than most trend pieces admit.
Not every warm tone works everywhere though… In a room with limited natural light, a deep terracotta can read heavy and closed in rather than warm. Lighter warm neutrals, sand, warm beige, do more of the work in those rooms without losing the same feeling.
This isn’t a color everyone’s copying blindly.
It’s a color doing something specific for how homes are lit and lived in right now, which is exactly why it’s showing up in so many different homes at once!! Journalising Designers Esha Bhandari
