The island came with an imaginary dinner party

A client once asked me to fit an island into her kitchen.
The kitchen was 9 feet wide.
I measured twice, just to be sure I wasn’t the problem.
I wasn’t….
She’d seen the island on a home tour video.
Marble top, bar stools, someone casually slicing lemons while a friend laughed in the background!!
She wanted that scene.
The island was just the part of it she could buy.
That’s the thing about status objects in a home.
They never arrive alone. They arrive carrying a whole imaginary evening.
The island promises friends who linger. The dining table for twelve promises dinner parties. The wine fridge promises a version of you who has people over and always knows what to pour.
Nobody is buying furniture.
They’re buying proof that the life exists.
I’m not saying skip the island.
Some kitchens are built for one, and it’s the best thing in the room.
But an island needs around 36 to 42 inches of clearance on every side to actually work. In a 9 foot kitchen, that math doesn’t leave you with a kitchen. It leaves you with an obstacle course.
We put in a slim worktop against the wall instead.
She cooks there every day now….
Her friends stand in the doorway with a drink and talk to her while she chops, which is exactly the scene she wanted in the first place.
It just didn’t need to cost her the floor.
A room doesn’t get bigger because the furniture is.
It gets better when the furniture is the size of the life you actually have!!
