5 Questions to Ask Your Painter Before You Repaint This Festive Season

Most repaint jobs go wrong before the first coat, in the conversation nobody has.

Here are the five questions worth asking before anyone opens a paint can this month.

Is the wall actually dry enough to paint? Not “has it stopped raining.” Ask specifically how they’re checking, a moisture meter reading, or just visual judgment. If the answer is vague, that’s worth pausing on, especially for a wall that took direct monsoon exposure.

What primer are you using, and why that one? A wall that had any dampness this monsoon needs a different primer than a wall that stayed dry. If the painter reaches for the same primer regardless of the wall’s history, that’s worth questioning.

How many coats, and how much drying time between them? Rushed coats, applied before the previous one has properly dried, are one of the most common reasons paint fails early. Ask for the actual gap they’re planning, not just the number of coats.

Are you treating this damp patch specifically, or painting over it? If there’s a known damp spot, this is the question that separates an actual fix from a cosmetic one. A patch that isn’t treated at the source will come back through fresh paint within months.

What’s the actual timeline for this to fully cure, not just dry to the touch? Paint can feel dry within hours but take weeks to fully cure. Ask what you should avoid, leaning furniture against it, hanging anything, during that window.

None of these questions are confrontational. They’re the difference between paint that holds through next monsoon and paint that’s peeling again by then.
