A corner that looks read in

A client asked me to design her a reading nook.

Window seat, linen cushions, a small shelf within arm’s reach, one soft lamp.

It was lovely..!!

Three months later, I stopped by.

The cushions were still perfectly plumped.

The shelf held two books, both facing out like they were posing.

When I asked how often she sat there, she smiled and said, “I keep meaning to.”

That’s when I understood something-

She hadn’t asked for a place to read.

She’d asked for the feeling of being someone who reads.

Those are two different briefs.

A real reading spot is a little messy.

The blanket is half on the floor. There’s a mug with a ring at the bottom. The book is face down, spine cracked, because you got up to answer the door.

A nook built for looks has no room for any of that.

It’s too finished to be used.

You’d have to ruin it to enjoy it.

So it sits there, waiting for a version of you that has more time, more calm, and somehow better posture.

I see this in every kind of room.

The home office built for a person who finally gets organized.

The yoga corner built for a person who wakes up at six.

We design for the person we plan to become, then wonder why the room feels slightly accusing.

Here’s what I do now.

Before I design a nook, I ask where you actually read today…

Usually the answer is the sofa, the bed, or the floor next to the radiator.

Start there.

A good reading spot isn’t built from scratch.

It’s the place you already go, with a better lamp and somewhere to put your tea.

The cushions can stay plump for someone else.

You deserve a corner that looks read in..
