Timeless according to whom, and when?

Every few weeks, someone tells me they want a “timeless” kitchen.

I ask them one question.

Timeless according to whom, and when?

They usually go quiet!!

Here’s the problem…

Nobody can see the future, so nobody can check a timeless claim.

You can only check the past.

And the past is not kind to it.

Harvest gold appliances were once the sensible, modern choice for a kitchen.

Wall to wall carpet was sold as the height of comfort.

Each one was someone’s safe, can’t-go-wrong pick.

Each one was dated within a few decades.

Not because it was badly made.

Because the world around it changed, and a room is always read against the world it sits in.

That’s the part “timeless” skips.

It pretends a design can stand outside of time.

A design can’t.

What it can do is hold up.

A well built cabinet door still closes in thirty years.

A good plan still lets you move through a room without a collision.

A material chosen for how it ages, not just how it photographs, still looks decent when the trend that picked it is gone.

Those are real, checkable qualities!

“Timeless” is none of those things.

It’s a hope, said with confidence.

So I’ve stopped promising it.

I promise what I can actually stand behind: sound proportions, honest materials, and a layout that works for the life in the room today.

Whether it looks right in 2056 isn’t mine to guarantee.

It’s not anyone’s.

The best a designer can do is build something worth keeping, and let the future decide what to call it.
