Interior design trends I’m loving and leaving heading into 2027

Last year, I made a list of what I was loving and leaving.

This year, I reread it…

Some of it aged well.

Some of it aged like milk.

So here is the 2027 version, with fewer opinions I will regret.

Loving

Warmth, finally.

Rooms are getting warmer.

Wood tones, soft light, fabrics you actually want to touch.

After years of cool grey, it feels like the house exhaled.

Curves.

Round sofas. Soft edges. Tables with no corners to bump into.

A curve does not ask anything of you.

It just lets you sit down.

Blue and sage.

Luminous Blue and Soulful Sage have both been named colors of the year for 2027.

Two calm colors, picked in a year when a lot of us could use one.

I will take it.

Imperfect, handmade things.

A bowl with a slight wobble.

A rug with a slightly uneven edge.

It is proof a person was here.

Leaving

Cool grey everything.

It had a good run.

But a grey room asks you to behave.

A warm one lets you slouch.

Rooms built for photos.

If you cannot put a mug down without ruining the shot, it is not a living room.

It is a set.

Beige on beige on beige.

I loved it.

I also could not tell where the sofa ended and the wall began.

It is drifting browner, and I think that is an upgrade.

Trends I cannot explain.

If I cannot tell you why something works, I will not recommend it.

That is the rule I am taking into 2027.

What I noticed

Look at both lists side by side.

Everything I am loving is a little softer, a little warmer, a little more human.

Everything I am leaving is a little stiffer, a little cooler, a little more afraid of a mess.

That is not a color story.

That is a mood.

After a few loud, uncertain years, we want rooms that hold us.

So that is my 2027 list.

Check back in a year.

I will tell you which parts I got wrong.

Not proud, not yet. Grateful. One year ago, I started writing about other people’s rooms. I thought I knew what it would be. Interviews, materials, a few good headlines..! I didn’t know it would turn
