The color everyone’s suddenly afraid of..

I held up a yellow swatch in a client meeting.
The room went quiet.
Nobody said no.
They just leaned back an inch, the way you do when someone offers you a drink you didn’t order.
I asked what was wrong.
“It’s a lot,” she said..
It was a pale, buttery yellow. On a wall, in morning light, it’s about as loud as a cup of tea.
But the swatch wasn’t the problem.
The problem was every room she’d scrolled past that year!!
Cream, oat, greige, repeat.
After enough of that, color stops being a choice and starts feeling like a risk.
That’s how color fear works.
It doesn’t start in your taste.
It starts in what you’ve been shown, over and over, until anything else looks like a mistake.
Nobody is afraid of yellow.
They’re afraid of being the only one who picked it.
I think there’s a mood underneath this, too.
When things feel uncertain, people reach for rooms that promise nothing will surprise them.
A calm, quiet palette is a way of saying “I can’t control much, but I can control this wall.”
That’s not a bad instinct.
It’s just a very expensive way to avoid a feeling..
Color is the cheapest, most reversible decision in a home.
A can of paint costs less than a cushion, and you can undo it in a weekend.
So here’s what I told her.
Try it on one wall. Live with it for two weeks. Watch it at 8am and again at 8pm.
If you hate it, we repaint, and you’ve lost a Saturday.
She painted the wall.
She hasn’t repainted it.
Sometimes the color was never the thing you were afraid of.
It was the first step out of the crowd!!
